How it works

Traditionally, a phone conversation is converted into electronic signals that traverse an elaborate network of switches in a dedicated circuit that lasts the duration of a call. Digis Unlimited Phone Service uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) where conversations are converted to packets of data that travel over the Internet, just like e-mail or web pages. The packets are sent to a server, where they are reassembled and sent out over the public switched telephone network to the phone that you dial. It is priced much lower than standard phone service, and the quality is nearly identical to, or sometimes better than, traditional phone service.

What kind of equipment is required?

All you need is a high-speed Internet connection and a phone adapter. Digis provides the phone adapter that allows your standard phone to use the Internet connection to place calls. The Digis adapter can link to an entire home's wiring so that all phones in your home can use the service. The adapter is plugged in between your Internet connection and your router or computer. Your phone can then be plugged directly into the adapter, or a phone wire can be run from the adapter to a phone extension jack so that all the phones in your home can use the service.

What is the voice quality like?

The quality is typically as good as a cell phone, and most times as good or better than a land line.

What are the advantages over a landline phone?

The Digis Unlimited Phone service makes long-distance calling less expensive by removing some of the access charges required for the use of the public telephone network. All long distance calls to US and Canadian locations are included in our low monthly rate. You can take your Phone Adapter with you when you travel and use it wherever you have a high-speed Internet connection. The Digis Phone Service includes advanced features such as configuring call-forwarding through a web tool, receiving e-mail and text message notification of voicemail messages, call transfer, etc. Virtually all the traditional telephone features are included in the low price at no additional charge, and additional features that go beyond the typical land line phone are available as well.

What are the limitations of VoIP?

Since Voice over IP operates over the Internet, Digis Phone service does not work during a power outage or if your Internet connection is down. However, a backup number (such as a cell phone) can be used as a "failover" phone, which will ring if the Digis Phone service is unavailable. Fax machines and DVRs (digital video recorders) or satellite TV connections may or may not work on an Internet phone connection. You may want to explore using an Internet fax service such as e-fax (www.efax.com). Alarm systems do not work on the service - if you have an alarm system that connects to a phone line, you may want to investigate connecting it directly to the Internet or a cell phone.

What are the taxes and fees?

The Digis Phone service is required to collect certain taxes and fees. These are typically about $5/mo. per line and are based on the city you live in. The fees are detailed on your monthly bill. They may include:

- 911 Recovery Fee, State 911 Fee and Poison Control Fee: The Emergency 911 Recovery Fees and Poison Control Fees are used to recover costs directly associated with the developing, implementing and maintaining a nationwide and local E911 and poison control service in compliance with FCC regulations.

- State Sales & Use Tax: These are state, local and municipal taxes that are collected based on the city you live in.

- Municipal Telecom Tax: This tax is assessed based on the city you live in.

- Federal Universal Service Fund: The Universal Service Fund is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program designed to ensure the availability of affordable telecommunications service to schools, libraries and rural healthcare facilities; it also serves to subsidize local service in high-cost areas and low-income households. This fee is based on a quarterly percentage that is assessed by the FCC. For more information, please visit www.fcc.gov.
